How To Find Your Home Decor Style
The journey of nailing your home decor style…
Do you ever feel overwhelmed when trying to nail down your home’s style or vibe? Instead of trying to replicate someone else’s vision, how can you make your home’s style your own? A project like this can be a big undertaking and it’s important to start with a goal in mind to help guide your decisions when refreshing either your furniture or decor. Some words I would use to describe the mood I set out to achieve:
Inviting, clean, warm, eclectic, fresh, classic.
I want to feel inspired, capable, cozy, and productive.
I want it to be a place where I can treasure memories, moments, and define how I want to live my days.
Do these seem intense? Haha. I really truly believe in the power of a space and how it can influence your patterns, behaviors, and actions. Some of these vibes/descriptors might seem contradictory, but it’s the juxtaposition and balance that keep it all cohesive and grounded.
how to plan for a home decor refresh
Here are some questions to help you plan for your next home refresh:
What sources inspire you the most?
For me, when I see something on social that I reaaally love, I get a jolt of energy and I know that inspiration has landed. Keep track of these occasions by bookmarking/pinning.
Jot down some words/vibes you want to feel in your home.
It truly is about designing an environment collectively, not just adding piece by piece or item by item. That way, when you are evaluating purchasing something, you can measure it against your intentions for your space. Get specific!
Pick a color pallet.
Sure you can have pops of color wherever and whenever you want, but there should be some anchored theme going on behind the scenes (this is what makes it feel like a collective, rather than piecemealed). In our new space, I wanted things to be bright and warm (ivory, cream, etc.), but also brought in some richness as well with black dining chairs to add that contrast. Accessories and styling is a safe bet to adding in some color outside of your chosen theme.
Draw it out.
A big piece of the home decor puzzle is flow. Consider how you will move throughout the space. When I was younger, I would literally draw out a diagram of how I wanted to rearrange my room. Anyone else? The same is still true today! Mapping out the flow with pen and paper is key to visualizing how the space will work, before doing all the heavy lifting!
Know your sizes.
Make sure you have a tape measure on hand! I have definitely been guilty of not paying attention to size and selecting items that don’t work in the space. This is crucial for big ticket items like couch or dresser as they can underwhelm or overwhelm the room quite quickly.
Understanding the need.
Sometimes, we just feel like mixing things up — I feel this way quite frequently! However, it’s important to understand the difference between tweaking the small things vs. a complete overhaul. You would be surprised at the powerful difference that rearranging the coffee table, bookshelf, or counter top can make! If it’s more in the territory of starting fresh like we did, really challenge yourself to think of what you currently have and how it could be re-purposed to fit within your new vibe.
Ultimately, remember there are no hardcore rules and everything is open to interpretation. and preference. Have fun designing your space (it’s where you live after all!), and make it functional and reflective of you.
I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into our new space and that it offers you some inspiration along the way.
